This place is historic!

Lobitos, Peru

fearinenglish

IF YOU believed everything you read on internet forums the world would be a pretty boring place, mainly because you wouldn’t go anywhere. You gotta wonder about some of these kooks who write shit on the internet (yes I realise that includes me). If I’d believed the things I’d read about Lobitos on the internet – that there was a good chance I’d get bashed, dropped in on constantly and all my shit would get stolen – I never would’ve rocked up here. Likewise, If I’d believed the place looked as if it was ‘straight out of a horror movie‘, like this paranoid kook wrote on their blog, I would’ve steered well clear of the town. But I didn’t believe the naysayers and when I leave here this week my stay will have totalled around 40 days – the longest I’ve stayed put in any one place on this trip.

In the 1st leg played at the Republican Central stadium in Dushanbe they won 4-0, they did an amazing match and they showed a very good collective game, With this victory Istiklol position themselves as favorites for the title, they are near to emulate the same campaign that they did 3 years ago when they won the AFC ´President´s Cup at home soil, in 2012 the AFC President´s Cup Final round was played in Dushanbe and Istiklol won it in great style, now this group of players want to make the same and bring the AFC Cup troph to Dushanbe but first they must progress to the semifinals and wait for their next rival who will be Kitchee from Hong Kong or Kuwait SC from Kuwait.

Sandals For Goalposts

As September and the latest round of World Cup / Asian Cup qualifiers draws ever closer, Tom Danicek tries to set the mood in your living room with his special feature on Uzbekistan and their youth. In the first part, he takes a look at the recent U-20 World Cup and some of their outstanding prospects…

Uzbekistan is a bit of an odd one out as far as the Asian footballing scene is concerned, isn’t it? You talk about the Middle East, the Far East, India or Australia as stand-alone subjects… but you barely talk about Uzbekistan. It doesn’t seem to fit anywhere, not even in a simplistic West-East perspective.

Uzbekistan is just different. Irrevocably associated with the former Soviet Union, hence carrying a touch of Eastern European scent. Widely respected albeit not featuring at a single World Cup or at least in an international play-off in their history. Producing distinguished talents without registering a club side with…
